When we talk about plastic, we think oil, pollution, infinite lifespan. Bio-sourced PLA breaks this mold.
Where does PLA come from?
PLA stands for polylactic acid. It is produced from plant resources — mainly corn starch, sometimes sugar cane or wood fiber. The process has been known since the 90s but has exploded with the popularization of 3D printing.
Compostable, really?
Yes, but with a nuance: PLA is industrially compostable (controlled temperature and humidity), not in a garden bin. This is nevertheless a huge step forward compared to classic fossil plastic, which takes 500 years to degrade.
Why we chose it at Atelier Nörea
- Made in Europe: our filaments come from French and European supply chains (Francofil, ColorFabb...).
- No toxic emissions: no harmful emissions during printing or use.
- Organic matte texture: PLA gives the Gloomy and Corail lamps that soft finish reminiscent of stone or wood.
- Lightness: 400g for a Gloomy lamp, 380g for a Corail. Easy to move, give as a gift, or ship.
What about the color?
The pigments in PLA are plant-based or mineral in most filaments. The color is in the material — no paint, no topcoat that flakes off.
